HONGKONG HOTELS GOES BACK TO SHANGHAI
South China Morning Post

After an absence of more than 50 years, Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, which owns and operates the luxury Peninsula chain, is to return to Shanghai with plans to build a hotel on the Bund.

A source said HK Hotels would soon sign an agreement with the Shanghai municipal government relating to a five-star hotel project to be built on the site of the former British consulate.

The project's estimated investment was US$150 million, the source said. "The Bund is Shanghai's best place. It's an historic icon," the source said.

The project will benefit from the local government's 18 billion yuan (HK$16.72 billion) plan to transform nearby Nanjing Road, the city's busiest street, into a world-class shopping, tourist and entertainment district, on a par with New York's Fifth Avenue.

In 2001, management consultant McKinsey & Co said the transformation - when completed in 2010 - could triple the area's annual retail sales volume to 40 billion yuan from 14 billion yuan.

A HK Hotels spokesman confirmed the group was in discussion with one entity for a possible hotel in Shanghai but refused to disclose more details.

"We have indicated an interest to return to Shanghai for years," the spokesman said. "But we can say nothing until an official announcement is made."

The group pulled out from Shanghai in 1947 after it sold the Palace Hotel.

The new Shanghai project comes just a week after HK Hotels raised HK$1.15 billion through a share placement.

Teresa Lai, an analyst with BOC International, said in a report the new funds would give HK Hotels greater flexibility in its expansion plans, including its scheduled 2007 opening of a Tokyo project and another possible property in Shanghai.

Another analyst said the group's expansion into Shanghai had come earlier than she expected as she believed the talks would be completed next year.
